WINES OF THE WEEK
MASI CAMPOFIORIN ROSSO DEL VERONESE 2015
Italy (13%, Waitrose, £9.74 down from £12.99 until Oct 30)
A Venetian red made by refermenting red wine with semi-dried grapes to bring extra richness and body, before ageing it in Slavonian and French oak. Think sour and dried cherries, and old sideboards with the slightest hint of wood polish. Gorgeous with autumn roasts.
BURRA BROOK MERLOT 2017
Australia (13.5%, M&S, £7)
It’s not often that we see a merlot makes it on to this page. Could the secret here be the fact that this particular one is blended with nine per cent tempranillo, which brings a welcome tweak to the fruity, rounded red? Whatever, you’ll find it a solid buy – attractive, reassuring, and warm.
Beautifully creamy and fresh viognier with just a hint of peaches and honeysuckle. Also a bargain.
