THE BEST SALVIAS TO GROW UNDER ROSES
For this specialised purpose it is best to use compact varieties of salvia that won’t drown the roses. There is no doubt that Salvia ‘Amistad’ is a lovely thing, but it is simply too tall. With all of those listed below, you can tuck the salvias in under the skirts of the rose; and you want forms with a strong, pungent, aromatic smell.
‘Nachtvlinder’ – this is a luscious, crimsonmaroon purple.
‘Stormy Pink’ – and/ or ‘Krystle Pink’, which is a similar smoky pink colour.
S. microphylla ‘Cerro Potosi’ – a lovely, rich, deep pink.
‘Jezebel’ – red flowers that stand out strongly from dark-crimson calyces and stems.
