WINES OF THE WEEK
THE UNCOMMON WINE OF ENGLAND
(11.5%, Selfridges, £5 for a 250ml can)
This is an effervescent, crisp white that tastes delicious and is beautifully packaged. It’s made from the bacchus grape, and has an edgy grassy, hawthorn and chalk taste that sits well with the sharp pinpricks of the bubbles. By far the best canned wine I’ve tasted.
MARIS ORGANIC ROSÉ FRANCE
(13%, Waitrose, £3.49 for 250ml) one of the hits. For me it’s a wine of two halves – it opens well with the red berry scent you’d expect of a southern French rosé but the finish isn’t quite right. I’d probably only buy this one if I were out and thirsty. Blaufränkisch
2017 Austria (bibwine.co.uk, £33.50 for a 2.25l box)
From the company that was set up to revolutionise the quality of bag-in-box, a juicy and refreshing red wine made from the blaufränkisch grape. Works beautifully slightly chilled and is slightly bloody with a hint of white pepper.
