WINES OF THE WEEK
Clos Floridène Blanc 2018 Graves, Bordeaux, France (12.5%, the Wine Society, £21)
Situated mostly on a limestone plateau close to the sweet wine area of Barsac, this is a half-and-half blend of sauvignon blanc and sémillon that is aged in oak and has a lovely rich texture. Think lemon curd, star jasmine, oak spice and a rinse of refreshing grapefruity acidity.
Châteaux Tour Chapoux Sauvignon Blanc 2019 Bordeaux (13%, Waitrose, £9.39)
From the Entre-Deux-Mers region, this is a clean sauvignon blanc with clear lemon flavours backed with a gentle swell of guava. If you want to try an unoaked sauv-sémillon Bordeaux blend, go for the Ch Saint-Jean-des-Graves 2019 (Waitrose, £9.99). While for a barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc, try the Ch De Rochemorin 2018 PessacLéognan (Waitrose, £13.99).
Klein Constantia Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2019 South Africa (13.5%, Majestic, £14.99 or £12.99 in a mixed six)
Klein Constantia’s sweet Vin de Constance was recommended in Sense and Sensibility “for its healing powers on a disappointed heart”. The estate still makes it, but there’s a new focus on quality sauvignon blancs. This is a joyful example, with hints of mango and nectarine.
