Mignolet has to go, says Carragher
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher told his former club that they must sign a new goalkeeper to challenge the Premier League’s elite after Simon Mignolet’s mistake helped Arsenal salvage a 3-3 draw.
Liverpool were in control and leading 2-0 when the momentum shifted. Arsenal scored three times in five minutes and Mignolet was clearly at fault for the second, using one hand instead of two to try to keep out Granit Xhaka’s shot.
“There’s some movement on the ball but you have to do better than that – it’s shocking from the goalkeeper,” said Carragher. “Until they get a keeper of decent quality they won’t challenge the top sides.”
Liverpool were still able to claw level, sparking wild celebrations from manager Jurgen Klopp, who threw his water bottle to the ground as emotion got the better of him. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was disciplined this season by the Football Association for kicking a bottle and Klopp apologised for his behaviour.
“I was happy and it was a kind of aggressive happy,” said the German. “I have made my apology. I react sometimes a little bit strange.”
Klopp was angered by his team missing the chance to extend their lead over Arsenal to four points. “You need to be angry with yourself, not sad or insecure,” he said. “He [Mignolet] misjudged it. A second hand would have helped but that is how it is. It’s not too cool but we had five minutes where we had obvious, individual problems. We opened the door.”
Arsenal’s first half was a “nightmare”, according to manager Arsene Wenger, but he praised the performance of Jack Wilshere and said that he would offer the midfielder an extension to a contract that expires in June.
