Aguero out of City’s trip to Stoke with a knee injury

-

Sergio Aguero will miss Manchester City’s Premier League visit to Stoke City this evening after picking up a knee injury in training.

The striker, City’s leading scorer this season with 30 goals, has indicated he will be out for around two weeks after suffering the injury on Saturday.

It means that Gabriel Jesus is set to make his first Premier League start in more than two months after recovering from medial knee ligament damage.

Aguero’s injury is not as big a setback as it could have been, given that City do not play again for nearly three weeks following tonight’s match at the Bet365 Stadium.

Aguero posted on Twitter yesterday: “During training I had a discomfort on my left knee. The club’s doctors told me I’ll be back with the team in approximately two weeks.”

Manager Pep Guardiola is likely to call on Jesus, having eased the Brazilian back to fitness following his injury suffered in the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace on Dec 31.

Jesus made his comeback as a substitute in the Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal on Feb 25, then came on from the bench in each of their next two league matches before returning to the starting line-up against Basel in the Champions League last Wednesday.

David Silva is also set to feature for City this evening, having missed the match against Basel in order to be with his ill son in Spain.

Guardiola says he will continue to give Silva as much time off as he needs, following the premature birth of his son Mateo in Valencia in December, and will allow him to miss the club’s planned training break in Abu Dhabi this week.

Guardiola said: “We’ve said family is the most important thing. He needs to go back and see his son and wife, who are doing well. He has to go there.”
