Makinson bags his 100th try for Saints as leaders romp past Widnes

-

Mark Percival and Tommy Makinson both scored two tries as St Helens maintained their four-point cushion at the top of Super League with a comfortable 28-6 win at Widnes.

Justin Holbrook, the St Helens coach, spoke of his pride after seeing his team add a second derby scalp to that of Wigan over the Easter period. “I’m really proud of the playing group as 16 players of the 17 who played on Good Friday have backed that up today. Credit to the players,” he said. Makinson’s brace included his 100th for the club. “To bring up 100 tries is a real achievement,” added Holbrook.

Castleford’s five-match winning run came to an end in a mud bath at the Mend-a-hose Jungle, where Warrington pulled off an 18-6 win.

The Wolves scored tries at the end of each half through Toby King and Daryl Clark but, for most of the contest, were indebted to the marksmanship of Stefan Ratchford, whose three penalty goals proved crucial.

“That was tough going considering the conditions,” said Steve Price, the Warrington coach. “I’ve just spoken to Hilly [captain Chris Hill] and he’s never played in those conditions before.”

Wigan bounced back to winning ways after their bruising defeat to St Helens as they ran in eight tries, including four from Liam Marshall, in testing conditions to beat Hull KR 44-6.

Five of those tries came in a 13-minute spell through Sam Tomkins, Liam Farrell (two), George Williams and Marshall as Hull KR failed to create one clear chance in the opening 40 minutes.

Marshall added three more after the break as Wigan recorded their sixth win from eight games in 2018.

At Headingley, Ash Handley scored his seventh try in four games as an injury-weakened Leeds moved into the top four after digging deep to earn a 20-0 victory over Salford.

There was late drama at the KCOM Stadium, where Marc Sneyd kicked a 50-metre drop goal with 90 seconds remaining to secure

Hull’s dramatic 27-26 win over

Wakefield. Hull coach Lee Radford was delighted, describing it as “an unbelievable effort”. Catalans Dragons beat Huddersfield 27-6 in the day’s other game.
