Rahm downs Woods
Legacy was not lost on Jon Rahm as he joined illustrious Spanish company in the list of Ryder Cup heroes.
The 23-year-old rookie revealed that he thought immediately of Seve Ballesteros after sinking his winning putt against Tiger Woods.
“There is a lot going on for me right now,” said Rahm (below), close to tears. “The memory of Seve and my grandpa, who would have loved to be here, who passed away at the [US] PGA.”
Rahm’s against-the-odds singles victory against the biggest name in golf was an awesome show of power.
Having last week promised to have electricity coming out of him, on the 17th he produced a thunderbolt. His 365-yard drive from the tee set up a birdie that completed a 2&1 victory over Woods, who suffered his fourth straight loss at Le Golf National.
Rahm, who usually listens to Eminem tracks right before his first shot, said: “To beat Tiger, one of the all-time greats, if not the greatest, on the Sunday, at a pivotal point, it is the best feeling of my life.”
Rahm had walked into the tournament oozing confidence. Having reached No2 in the world rankings earlier this year, Bjorn believed his fiery temperament and powerful play were the perfect blend for Ryder Cup success.
Two up with three to play yesterday, Rahm had handed Woods a lifeline by threeputting the 16th.
His strength of character to then birdie on the 17th sparked wild celebrations.
