Klopp charged for pitch invasion

- By John Percy

Jurgen Klopp has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for his celebrations at the end of Liverpool’s derby win over Everton on Sunday.

Klopp (right) is facing a fine for sprinting 40 yards on to the Anfield pitch to embrace goalkeeper Alisson Becker, following Divock Origi’s goal in the sixth minute of added time.

The FA reviewed the footage yesterday and concluded that Klopp’s actions represented misconduct.

It is understood the FA believes Klopp’s celebration was inappropriate as the game was yet to end and risked inciting trouble in the stands.

The rules also state that managers must stay in their technical area “except in special circumstances”.

After the game, Klopp said: “I have to apologise because I didn’t want to be disrespectful – but I couldn’t stop myself. It just happened. I’m not sure what the FA has to do in a situation like this, but I will have to wait.

“If I could describe how I felt when the goal went in, then I would have control over it.

“We don’t want to look for excuses, but that’s how it is. The plan was not to run on to the pitch. When I chose to stop, I was close to Alisson. He was surprised.”

Klopp, who has until 6pm on Thursday to respond to the charge, will not receive a touchline ban.
