Uefa confirms England to host Women’s Euro 2021
England will host the 2021 Women’s European Championship, Uefa confirmed in Nyon, Switzerland yesterday.
The Football Association was the only bidder but still had to meet strict guidelines to secure the rights.
The final will be held at Wembley in July 2021, a year after the venue stages the men’s Euro 2020 final. The eight other proposed venues are Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium, Brentford’s new Community Stadium, Manchester City’s Academy Stadium, MK Dons’ Stadium MK, Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, Rotherham United’s New York Stadium, Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane and Southampton’s St Mary’s.
Peterborough’s ABAX Stadium and Notts County’s Meadow Lane were included in the original proposal but were not listed by Uefa.
Despite seven of the latest England squad having ties to Sunderland, there is controversially no venue from the North East.
Martin Glenn, the FA chief executive, said when the bid was submitted in August: “Our bid reflects our strong commitment to supporting and growing women’s and girls’ football in England.
“We have invested heavily in the women’s game in recent years and the opportunity to bring the tournament to England would repre“that sent a landmark moment for women’s football in this country.
“Our aim is to make Euro 2021 the biggest and best showcase for women’s football ever seen in Europe. We have not only the ambition, but the tournament-hosting experience, infrastructure and incredible spectator demand to ensure we would deliver a truly memorable tournament.”
England previously hosted the women’s Euros in 2005, but this is the first time they have staged the tournament since its move to a 16-team competition in 2017.
The 16 sides will be drawn into four groups of four, with the top two in each section progressing to the knockout phases.
As hosts, England will receive a bye to the finals.
