Golfer Francesco Molinari was a hugely popular winner of the overseas vote, his Ryder Cup playing partner Tommy Fleetwood presenting him with his award.

Molinari, who also claimed his first major at the Open this summer, was the first European ever to win all five points at a Ryder Cup.

Tennis player Billie Jean King took the lifetime achievement award, while racing driver Billy Monger was presented with the Helen Rollason Award in what was undoubtedly the most emotional moment of the evening.

The 19-year-old lost both legs in an accident last year in Formula 4. After campaigning to get the FIA to lift its ban on disabled drivers racing in single-seaters, Monger came back to claim four podiums in British Formula 3 in a modified car.

Southgate was the “unanimous” winner of best coach.

He promised he and his players would “not rest” until England had won the World Cup itself, which rather cruelly had been brought to Birmingham to remind everyone of what might have been.

“I’m incredibly proud to receive this award,” Southgate said. “If you win as a coach it means your players have done something right. We’ve had an incredible group of players so thank you to them for their help. Ultimately, until we all win [the World Cup], we won’t rest.”
