Cipriani denied chance to stake Japan claim

- By Mick Cleary

England and Barbarians have resisted the opportunity to give Danny Cipriani one more chance to press his claims on a Twickenham stage, by overlooking him for Sunday’s Quilter Cup finale.

Instead England have opted for an inexperienced squad to take on a Barbarians team drawn from nine countries, who include Joe Marler, of Harlequins. The prop’s selection means that the Barbarians have more England caps (59) than England, with 11.

Eddie Jones has handed over the coaching reins of an England XV to former Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder, who is now on the Rugby Football Union staff.

Jones has already made clear that he wants his leading players to rest next month ahead of a series of training camps leading up to the four-match World Cup warm-up programme, which begins with a game against Wales at Twickenham on Aug 11. That edict should, at least, provide solace to Cipriani. The final 31-man squad for the World Cup will be named in late August or early September.

There are two players who might yet feature in Japan were there to be a rash of injuries. Harlequins flyhalf Marcus Smith has been chosen to play rather than represent England Under-20s in the junior World Championship in Argentina. His Quins team-mate, back-row forward Alex Dombrandt, caps a fine breakthrough season with his inclusion. Barbarians are coached by Pat Lam, Bristol director of rugby.
