England man marking

- By Michael Vaughan

7.5 Jason Roy

Appeared in great nick. Assessed conditions early. Realised it was not an absolute road, that there was a bit of tennis-ball bounce, and played nicely.

2 Jonny Bairstow

Looked like he thought it was a googly. It turned a bit but he offered the wrong angle with the bat and perhaps did not pick it. He will now see a lot of spin.

7.5 Joe Root

Seemed in great touch. He was controlling the innings, and on pitches that do a little bit he will be key to England’s batting.

7.5 Eoin Morgan

Very good. Liked that he was willing to gamble, as when he danced down and hit a six over extra cover. Has a clear mind about how he is going to bat.

9 Ben Stokes

The complete performance. Played a smart innings – two years ago he would have played a big shot too soon. Then that catch and two wickets.

5 Jos Buttler

They bowled well at him. The slower balls were harder to hit towards the end for all players, so it was very difficult for Jos to get going.

6 Chris Woakes

The ball did not move for him but I think he will still have his moments. You cannot judge him on a few overs here on this kind of pitch.

7 Moeen Ali

Has that wicket-taking knack. Does not worry about the last over. Struggling with the bat, but is the sort to stroke 70 off 30 balls in his next innings.

6 Liam Plunkett

You are never quite sure what he is going to bowl but he is a wicket-taker. Where South Africa could not take wickets in middle overs, England did.

9 Jofra Archer

Delivered everything we had talked about. Bouncers will be important and to hit Hashim Amla as hard as he did showed his threat. Outstanding.

7 Adil Rashid

Always threatening a wicket. Do not think South Africa picked him, and if the wickets stay dry then he will be a very important bowler for England.
