Parris remains on penalty duty despite two failures

- By Katie Whyatt Still confident: Nikita Parris backs herself to score with her next penalty

Nikita Parris has vowed to keep taking penalties for her country but insisted she needed to “do more” after scoring only one of her three spot kicks at the World Cup.

England had the chance to go 4-0 up in the 83rd minute in their quarter-final against Norway on Thursday, but Parris’s penalty was saved by Ingrid Hjelmseth.

She had been kept out during England’s 1-0 group-stage win against Argentina at the same venue, the Stade Oceane in Le Havre, but scored from the spot in England’s opening 2-1 win over Scotland in Nice.

“For sure, I’ll step up,” Parris said. “I’ve got confidence in myself and in my ability. When you step up and take a penalty it’s 50-50, but you’ve got to back yourself. The keeper made a fantastic save. The keeper’s done her homework so I need to go back, research and do more.

“I need to practise on the training pitch as I’ve got to do better on the spot. It’s two penalties and two misses – it’s not good enough, in my opinion, for my standards as a player. I’m disappointed in that aspect but I’m happy with my performance. I’ve got mixed emotions.”

When asked if she would meet the team psychologist to discuss penalties, Parris replied: “Talk to the psychologist for what? I don’t think I need to talk to a psychologist. I’m confident in myself and my own ability. It’s not a case of I’ve missed a penalty and I’m down. I’ve just dominated the left-back for 80 or 90 minutes.”

The England head coach, Phil Neville, added: “She’s missed two penalties and they have both been really good saves. She’ll take the next one.

“She is our best penalty taker. She was smiling after the game. She realises that these things happen, and she just has to get on with it and score the next one.”

Tuesday’s semi-final will take place at the Groupama Stadium, the ground used by Lyon Feminin, whom Parris has just joined.
