Murray in dispute over taking mixed doubles risk

- By Simon Briggs

Andy Murray admitted last night that he was in dispute with his coach Jamie Delgado over the Wimbledon mixed-doubles event. Without giving away too many details, Murray made it sound as though he wanted to play, but Delgado felt that it would be too much of a risk to take on the extra workload.

Murray has played only five competitive matches since being fitted with a metal hip at the end of January, and they were all short-format doubles encounters with two standard sets followed by a super tie-break if required.

But the men’s doubles at Wimbledon – which he has entered with France’s Pierre-hugues Herbert – are played over best of five sets. If there happened to be a rain delay – or if Herbert were to make a deep run in the singles – the schedule could back up and put extra pressure on his body.

“We spoke about it last night and again this morning and let’s just say coach and player have differing views!” said Murray. “It is a tough one and I don’t know who will win, but we will come to an agreement. I am not going to make a decision on it without everybody being on board with it.

“Everybody is keen on me playing and I would like to play, but it is [about] whether or not it is the right thing or the best thing to do. The sign-in is on Wednesday, but I won’t leave it to the last minute.

“I still don’t know who my partner will be. I have spoken to a few players and a lot of them are quite relaxed. Some of them weren’t planning on playing, so that if I did not play at the last minute they wouldn’t be disappointed. I have a few options, but I have not chosen.”
