Powell hails ‘key win’ as Castleford cut loose

-

Castleford Tigers coach Daryl Powell hailed a “huge win” after his side thumped London Broncos 42-10 to climb back into the Super League play-off places.

Former London players Tuoyo Egodo and Mike Mcmeeken both scored twice as Castleford recorded a resounding victory to end the Broncos’ three-match winning streak.

Egodo opened the scoring in the 12th minute and the winger crossed again in the second half while second-rower Mcmeeken touched down twice in the first period. The Broncos trailed just 16-4 at the break after winger Kieran Dixon got on the scoresheet but after the interval they capitulated, conceding five second-half scores as Castleford ran riot.

Jordan Rankin, Jake Trueman, James Clare and Chris Clarkson also scored for the Tigers as they claimed a win which lifted them up to fourth.

Powell said: “I thought we played well for the whole game. The table is tight and I haven’t looked at it too much, but for us this was a key win.”

Egodo, meanwhile, is out of contract at the end of the season and appears likely to depart.

Rhys Williams claimed a late try for the Broncos but they returned to the bottom of the Super League table as Leeds beat Catalans Dragons 31-12 to climb to ninth. However, Leeds coach Richard Agar believes the Rhinos are far from safe from relegation despite the result.

Three tries in the opening 17 minutes from Adam Cuthbertson, Tom Briscoe and Brad Singleton, combined with second-half scores from Konrad Hurrell and Jack Walker, lifted Leeds.

Agar said: “It’s all very tight and everyone has to play each other. Two or three wins can get you viewed differently and a couple of defeats have you looking over your shoulder. Psychologically I don’t think we’ve been training or playing like a team that’s bottom of the league.”
