Local buy-in

The Daily Telegraph - Sport - - The Open -

After almost seven decades of waiting, the local businesses and residents of Portrush were not going to let their chance go begging. Most of the houses were rented out for an average of £5,000 for the week, and the local bars projected takings at nine times the average they would expect for the entire month of July. The Open had faced awkward questions over a “celebration of marching bands” from the Portrush Sons of Ulster, but on the packed streets and in the heaving bars there was not a shred of tension. Ireland, both north and south, emerged from the shadow of Scotland as a premier destination for golfers who love the feel of links beneath their feet.
