Everton midfielder Gueye is bound for PSG as fee agreed

- By Chris Bascombe

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye’s £30million move to Paris St-germain is set to go through after he passed a medical with the French champions.

Gueye spent yesterday in Paris after a fee was agreed, Everton permitting the 29-year-old to complete a deal which could be announced today.

The midfielder has wanted the switch since PSG first bid in January. Now Everton are resigned to his departure. Gueye was not scheduled to return to training until next week after he was granted extra time off because of his commitments with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations. However, there is now an acceptance he will not play for Everton again.

Gueye joined Everton in 2016 after a season with Aston Villa, having previously played for Lille. He made 99 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals.

PSG made an unsuccessful move for Gueye in January, lodging a bid worth £26million. Everton wanted in excess of £30million for the midfielder at that time. Gueye told Everton he wanted to leave midway through last season, but was commended for his professionalism when told he had to stay.

Last weekend, manager Marco Silva admitted he was uncertain about Gueye’s future. “We don’t know what will happen with Gana and there is a lot of speculation, but let’s see what will happen in the next few days,” he said.

“We as a club hope to keep him because he is a really important player for us, but the market is open and like we are trying to buy players, some clubs can be interested in our players also.”

Silva has indicated he would like five additions over the next two weeks which, could make for a frantic end to the transfer window.

To secure so many deals Silva will have to spread his resources, although the sale of Ademola Lookman and imminent departure of Gueye will raise funds.

One of the more curious transfer stories is that of Everton’s move for Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

It is suggested Everton have had a bid of £55million rejected, and offered Cenk Tosun and James Mccarthy as part of a second bid. However, the club said in a statement last night that they “categorically deny that a bid has been submitted to Crystal Palace for Wilfried Zaha that included an increased sum plus Cenk Tosun and James Mccarthy. A bid was made over the weekend which was turned down. Both clubs agreed that was the end of the matter”.

Zaha, who has indicated he wants to move to Arsenal, has the quality Everton need but Palace’s valuation would absorb most of Silva’s kitty.

Everton have a list of targets, but also want to move those who are surplus to requirements.
