Cooper plays down Swansea chances

-

Swansea City manager Steve Cooper has refused to get carried away after his side went top of the Championship thanks to Wayne Routledge’s late winner at Leeds.

The victory was Swansea’s first at Elland Road for 70 years but Cooper says he wants to keep a lid on expectations despite being two points clear of second-placed Charlton Athletic.

“It’s a good start and a good tally to get so far but the only thing that’s important for us is to keep going and keep working,” he said.

“For us it’s not about making statements. It’s just looking at ourselves and striving to get better in the way we want to play and want to work. I love the football club and I think it’s a football club I’m proud to be part of, the way that the staff and supporters are when they come to the football club.

“I can see they’re really proud of it and I’m just one of them and completely bought in to what it stands for. I’m hoping the fans are seeing a coaching staff, performance staff and group of players doing their very best for the football club. We’re really proud to be part of it.”

Leeds winger Stuart Dallas, meanwhile, says his own side’s promotion push will not be badly derailed by their defeat.

“We’ve had a great start to the season and we shouldn’t forget that; we’re disappointed at the minute, but we will regroup and go again,” said Dallas after a loss that leaves Leeds third. “We know if we continue to play like we did, we will win more games than we lose, it’s just unfortunate we couldn’t do that against Swansea.”

But Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa felt his side should have won after dropping points at home for the second time this season.

“We have now lost five points playing at home, so you have enough space you can be a little bit disappointed. We cannot criticise the style of the team who play, but we were creating conditions to be able to win all six games we’ve played until now.”
