Archer and Burns rewarded with central contracts

Rory Burns and Jofra Archer will earn their first England central contracts today when the first round of new deals are announced at Lord’s by Ashley Giles.

Burns has been given a Test central contract and Archer both red-ball and one-day cricket deals. Alex Hales will be confirmed as having lost his central contract, further highlighting the long road he faces back to international cricket.

Archer will become one of England’s highest-paid cricketers, with the new contracts the most lucrative yet awarded by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The contracts replace the existing deals that expire next month and the terms and conditions have been set to mirror the next broadcast deal from 2020-2024. Players receive a retainer of £70,000 plus their Test and/or white-ball central contract. Test contracts are worth up to a maximum of £650,000, a rise from £475,000, and white-ball deals up from £175,000 to a maximum of £275,000. Giles, the director of England cricket, can award up to 22 contracts split across the formats. Players with multi-format contracts can expect to earn around £1 million once win bonuses and appearance fees are added.

Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid will lose their Test contracts, but will remain on white-ball deals. Joe Denly will receive a white-ball contract, which shows he has much to do to be considered a Test regular.

Giles is expected to confirm today that Eoin Morgan will carry on as England’s one-day captain and take the team to the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia next year.

With Morgan still in charge, it is difficult to see Hales working his way back into the side. Morgan rubber-stamped Hales’s axing from the World Cup squad when he failed a test for recreational drugs.

Double deal: Jofra Archer is set to become one of England’s best-paid players
