Ken Jones, one of Fleet Street’s most re­spected sports jour­nal­ists, has died aged 87. Merthyr Tyd­fil­born Jones covered foot­ball and box­ing around the world, in­clud­ing the leg­endary “Rum­ble in the Jun­gle” heavy­weight clash be­tween Muham­mad Ali and George Fore­man in Zaire in 1974. Jones, who played for Southend be­fore in­jury ended his ca­reer, came from a sport­ing fam­ily. His fa­ther, Ken, played for Ever­ton along­side Dixie Dean, Bryn Jones, his un­cle, a Wales in­ter­na­tional, and Cliff Jones, one of Ken’s cousins, was a key mem­ber of the Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur dou­ble-win­ning team of 1961.
