Deirdre drops out as Enable heads Arc list

The Daily Telegraph - Sport - - Racing - By Marcus Armytage

Enable was one of 16 runners left in Sunday’s Qatar Prix de l’arc de Triomphe, but whatever the size of the field at Longchamp, it will not include a potential fourth Japanese runner, Deirdre, after connections decided yesterday that she will not be entered at tomorrow’s supplementary stage.

Enable, who had a gallop on the Limekilns in Newmarket yesterday, is one of just three British-trained entries, along with stable companion Mehdaayih and Godolphin’s Ghaiyyath. But with the Hardwicke runner-up Nagano Gold representing the Czech Republic, the eightyear-old Matchwinner coming from Germany, three from Ireland and three from Japan, Europe’s most valuable race certainly has an international look to it.

Deirdre, who became the first Japanese Group One winner in Britain for 19 years when she won the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, caught the eye again with an unlucky fourth in the Irish Champion Stakes. But she will now head for the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot.

Although the Arc is widely assumed to be Enable’s 15th and last start, that decision is being deferred until after the race, which will be only her fourth start of the season.
