Two days after Great Britain’s female gymnasts had confirmed their presence at next year’s Tokyo Olympics, the men followed suit with a strong all-round showing in Stuttgart.

In the qualifying event at the World Championships, a team including Rio’s double gold medallist Max Whitlock sealed their place in tomorrow’s team final to make sure of a place in Japan next year. Whitlock was the outstanding performer, landing a superb 15.266 on his favourite apparatus, the pommel horse. He was ably supported by Joe Fraser, with a strong routine on the parallel bars, and the dependable James Hall. Giarnni Regini-moran and Dom Cunningham completed the team. In the blueriband individual event, Simone Biles, of the United States, was streets clear and also landed her “triple-double” skill for the first time in competition.
