Lewis Hamilton

I feel like giving up on everything

Lewis Hamilton sparked worries for his mental well-being yesterday after posting an Instagram message where he claimed he “felt like giving up on everything”.

A day after Extinction Rebellion protesters were ordered to stop demonstrating in London, the fivetime world champion wrote a series of laments – all of which he later deleted – about environmental destruction.

While the 34-year-old is on the cusp of sealing his sixth Formula One championship, it is the danger of global ecological disaster that has been preoccupying him most of late.

“Honestly, I feel like giving up on everything,” he told his 13.1 million followers. “Shut down completely. Why bother when the world is such a mess and people don’t seem to care? I’m going to take a moment away to gather my thoughts. Thank you to those of you who do give a damn about the world.”

Hamilton has recently embraced veganism and last month opened his own Neat Burger restaurant in central London, using only plant-based products.

“Extinction of our race is becoming more and more likely as we overuse our resources,” he said yesterday. “Agriculture farming is the largest pollutant we currently have by over 50 per cent, far more than our travel industry combined. I’m sad to see so many people, even close friends, ignore what is happening daily.

“We were taught that eating animal products was good for us, but we’ve been lied to for hundreds of years. I want my life to mean something, and honestly up until now my life has had no meaning.”

For all Hamilton’s sincerity, he has invited charges of hypocrisy, given the size of his own carbon footprint.

For several years, he travelled to F1 races by private jet. While he has since sold the aircraft, he still conducts a huge amount of first-class long-haul travel and serves as an ambassador at Mercedes for chief sponsor Petronas, one of the world’s largest oil and gas giants.
