Newcastle recruit Rose in £2m loan deal until summer

- By Matt Law

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to allow Danny Rose to join Newcastle United on loan until the end of the season.

Newcastle are poised to pay £2million to take left-back Rose in what constitutes a boost to manager Steve Bruce.

Rose had vowed to see out the remaining 18 months of his contract, but has fallen down the pecking order under head coach Jose Mourinho. The Newcastle loan will give him the chance to hold on to his place in the England squad for the European Championship.

Newcastle will have the option to buy Rose at the end of the loan and the 29-year-old appears to have played his last game for Spurs.

Rose joined Tottenham in 2007 from Leeds United and has played over 200 times. He has left on loan on four previous occasions, the last of which was to Newcastle’s Northeast rivals Sunderland.

Tottenham could still sign a striker before the transfer window shuts tomorrow night and have most recently shown an interest in Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.

Any deal with Chelsea is rated as difficult but not impossible and Spurs appear to have missed out on AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek to Hertha Berlin.

Tottenham had only been interested in a loan deal for Piatek, but Hertha have agreed to pay £33million for the player who flew to Germany last night.

Other than Giroud, who is also being chased by Inter Milan, Tottenham have looked at Willian Jose, Andre Silva and Islam Slimani, who is a target of Aston Villa.

The signing of winger Steven Bergwijn, who can also play through the middle, has relieved some of the pressure for Spurs to sign an out-and-out striker but they are still working on a list of options.

Tottenham officially announced the signing of Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven yesterday on a contract that runs to 2025.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen said he wanted to “try something new” after writing an emotional farewell to Tottenham fans.

Eriksen ended his 6½-year spell with the north London club on Tuesday after he completed a £17million move to Inter Milan.

“Dear Tottenham fans,” wrote the 27-year-old on Twitter. “I don’t know where to start! I didn’t have time to say goodbye to everyone, even though I felt like I played a lot of games where everyone said and thought I would be gone the next day. I have so many unbelievable memories. I enjoyed being at the training ground every day and playing games in the stadium so much, but sometimes you just want to try something new.”
