Begovic is villain turned hero in shoot-out drama

Asmir Begovic went from despair to joy in the space of a minute as Bournemouth defeated Crystal Palace 11-10 on penalties in the Carabao Cup second round.

After a goalless 90 minutes, the back-up goalkeeper saw his spot kick denied by Wayne Hennessey in a marathon shoot-out. It was the first miss out of 21 penalties but, after Hennessey blazed over the crossbar, Palace captain Luka Milivojevic also failed with his penalty to hand Bournemouth a thirdround tie against Manchester City on Sept 22.

Gillingham are heading to Wolves or Stoke after beating Coventry on penalties but Derby bowed out after blowing a home lead against Preston. Mike te Wierik was sent off shortly after Jason Knight opened the scoring, with Tom Barkhuizen equalising before Daniel Johnson’s stoppagetime spot-kick sealed a 2-1 victory.

Newport overcame Cambridge 1-0 thanks to Scott Twine’s late goal and will face Watford, who beat Oxford on penalties.
