Player ratings England

Dom Sibley
Misjudgment in the second innings when he left an arm ball. Playing so far in front of his pad makes him vulnerable on turning pitches.
6 Sam Curran
Golden duck started collapse, but two wickets in the second innings proved he influences a game. Should make way for Chris Woakes on Friday.
4 Zak Crawley
Too eager to impose himself and live up to last summer’s double hundred. A good player of spin, needs to see out first 30 balls and get himself in.
Honest in the assessment of his own performance after first-innings five-fer. Improved in the second innings, has to be more consistent.
7
Good return for a player who looked Test class again. If his technique holds up against pace, batting depth will be all the better for his recall.
7 Jonny Bairstow Jack Leach
Outbowled Bess in the first innings and grew into the game. Has barely bowled for 12 months, but should emerge as England’s senior spinner.
9
Outstanding start to year. Showed every other player how to pace a Test innings on a turning pitch. His hunger for runs was most welcome.
5 Joe Root Mark Wood
Generated bounce and pace in tough conditions, put his body on the line for his team. Not much joy on a slow pitch. Should be rested for next Test.
8 Dan Lawrence
Superb debut. Lawrence (below) proved he has the temperament for Test cricket. Calm in chaos of fourth evening. Dropped catch the only blot.
7
Not many runs, but a superb keeping performance on a low, slow pitch. Took all chances offered, including his first stumping in Test cricket.
8 Jos Buttler Stuart Broad
Outstanding, brought his experience mixing cutters and changes of pace and length. Will be happy to hand over to James Anderson on Friday.
