Salah: I want to stay but future is in club’s hands

- By Chris Bascombe

Mohamed Salah said his future is “in Liverpool’s hands” but has stressed he wants to sign a new Anfield deal.

The Egypt striker indicated earlier this season he was amenable to a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona, but in the same interview opened the door for a contract extension on Merseyside.

Asked to clarify the situation in an interview with Norway’s TV2 ahead of Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United, Salah, 28, said that it was up to Liverpool whether he stays beyond the 2½ years on his current deal. “I do not know [about a new contract],” he said. “If you ask, I say I want to stay here as long as I can, but as I have said before, it is in the hands of the club.

“I will always give 100 per cent to the last minute I am in this club and

I want to win as many trophies as I can. And I want to give 100 per cent to the people, who show me love all the time.”

Liverpool remain three points behind Manchester United after Sunday’s 0-0 draw. Injuries to key players have had an impact over the past few weeks, with Jurgen Klopp playing the past two Premier League games without a recognised centreback.

Despite that, attention has shifted to the strikers, with Liverpool failing to score in their past three Premier League games. “We started the

season really well,” said Salah. “Unfortunately, we haven’t done enough to win the last few games, but we can do better.

“We’ve lost some top players like Virg [Van Dijk] and Joe [Gomez], and Diogo Jota was also injured. The situation would have been better if we had all available, but we are not complaining since we have young players who have done very well and who are doing their best.

“Yes, we have had injuries, but we have to deal with the situation and continue. It is that, and not complaining, that will make us masters.”

Meanwhile, Sky TV has confirmed that Sunday’s clash attracted a record audience for a Premier League match shown only by the broadcaster in Britain.

The game had an average of 4.5million viewers and 4.8million viewers in the final five minutes.
