Man marking

- By Ian Whittell

Man Utd 4-2-3-1 Dean Henderson

Couple of good saves to deny Salah a hat-trick and showed good positional sense throughout. Could still do with improving his distribution.

Aaron Wan-bissaka

Couple of very important interceptions and his pace going forward caused Robertson problems on occasion. Quietly effective performance.

Victor Lindelof

Pass for Liverpool’s opener was played between him and Shaw and struggled with the guile of Firmino and Salah. Booked for a late trip on Divock Origi.

Harry Maguire

A liability with the ball at his feet, but made amends with some excellent defending and clearances as Liverpool’s full-backs peppered the area.

Luke Shaw

Delivered some fantastic set-pieces and his forward play down the left complemented Rashford and was United’s best point of attack. Decent defensively.

Paul Pogba

Played deep and his beautifully timed challenge on the edge of his own area sparked the counter for the equaliser. Non-stop tackling and a threat from set-pieces.

Scott Mctominay

Struggled with Liverpool’s high press and Firmino’s mobility, fouling the Brazilian and conceding a free-kick in a dangerous position in the first half.

Mason Greenwood

Looked lively with a couple of early forays and shots, showed superb composure and control to grab the equaliser before a brilliant assist for Rashford.

Donny van de Beek

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gambled by picking him ahead of Bruno Fernandes and should have done better when in on goal. Slowed down attacks on occasion.

Marcus Rashford

Incredible pass for the Greenwood equaliser and his pace down the left wing was United’s best outlet. Selfless and probing, he deserved his goal.

Edinson Cavani

Off-the-charts work-rate, had an important touch in the build-up to Rashford’s goal and hit a post. But badly at fault in Liverpool’s second goal.

Liverpool 4-3-3 Alisson Becker

Could not do much about any of the goals and made a couple of good blocks to keep United at bay. Survived one bad pass that could have proved costly, though.

Trent Alexander-arnold

His foraging forward left space behind that Rashford exploited but, when Liverpool were dominant, he played an important part in their attacks.

Rhys Williams

Has a tendency to go to ground too easily and let in United by doing that. Caught out horribly for the Rashford goal by miskicking a through ball.

Fabinho

Took a yellow card for the team when he hacked down Greenwood following a sloppy Alisson pass, but unfortunate to be penalised for Fernandes’s winner.

Andrew Robertson

The full-back is rediscovering his attacking mojo down the wing, but had his work cut out against the United counter-attack. Exposed for pace by Wan-bissaka.

James Milner

Lucky to escape sanction for a nasty late challenge on Maguire and saw Rashford’s pass sail inches over his head for the equaliser. Played a key role in Salah’s second.

Thiago Alcantara

Influential in midfield yet again, rarely wasted a pass and always looked capable of picking a pass to open up United’s defence. Couple of threatening shots also.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Started the move that led to the opener when space opened up in midfield, but was sacrificed early so Jurgen Klopp could get Sadio Mane on.

Mohamed Salah

No lack of confidence in the way he finished for both goals and might have had a hat-trick. His pairing with Firmino looked back to its best.

Roberto Firmino

Sublime pass to open up United’s defence for Salah’s opener and a nice pass for the second. His high pressing was the source of so many promising moments.

Curtis Jones

Played in an advanced role before Mane was brought on, when he moved back into midfield. Tireless endeavour until the bitter end.
