Coe eclipsed Giles record

- Ben Bloom

Elliot Giles catapulted himself among the all-time greats last night, smashing Lord Sebastian Coe’s British indoor 800metres record with the second-fastest run in history.

Already in great form having won both of his 800m races so far this year, Giles blew the field apart at the World Indoor Tour event in Torun, Poland.

His time of 1min 43.63sec improved double Olympic champion Coe’s indoor record by more than a second and put him behind only Wilson Kipketer on the all-time world list.

As a Nike-sponsored athlete wearing the latest track spikes, Giles’s achievement will continue the debate around the brand’s “super shoes” responsible for a number of startling runs over the past year.
