Robinson pushes England case with nine-wicket haul for Sussex

-

Ollie Robinson continued his push for England recognition with career-best bowling figures of nine for 78 as Sussex wrapped up an eight-wicket victory against Glamorgan in the County Championship.

Glamorgan started the day 62 runs in front at 252 for five, with Kiran Carlson and Callum Taylor well set. Robinson claimed his fifth wicket of the innings when Carlson edged to Aaron Thomason in the slips for 132. Hopes of wrapping up the Glamorgan innings quickly were dashed as Taylor and Dan Douthwaite stood firm.

Taylor went past his fifty from 132 balls and Glamorgan reached lunch at 336 for six with the chances of a drawn match increasing.

As had been the case throughout the match, it was Robinson who made the difference. He was back into the attack for the start of the afternoon session and had Douthwaite

dismissed lbw for 26. He repeated this feat with the next ball, James Weighell trapped in front to bag a pair on Glamorgan debut.

Robinson picked up the last two wickets, returning the best firstclass figures by an England-qualified player since Chris Woakes took nine for 36 against Durham in 2016.

He was completing a 13-wicket haul for the match.

Sussex needed 154 for victory, a total they reached with few alarms, Thomason top-scoring with 78 not out.

Former England all-rounder Tim

Bresnan led the way as Warwickshire pulled off a stunning victory to extend Nottinghamshire’s dismal record in first-class cricket to 29 matches without a win.

The 36-year-old Yorkshireman finished unbeaten on 68, sharing a stand of 113 with England fast bowler Olly Stone as Warwickshire chased down a target of 333 to win at Trent Bridge by three wickets despite Dominic Sibley being unable to bat because of a broken finger.

Lancashire claimed their first win of the championship season when they saw off Northamptonshire by 206 runs at Old Trafford.

The hosts had gone into the final day needing seven wickets and were made to work hard by Luke Procter. The former Lancashire all-rounder batted for just over six hours and was the last man out for 93 in a total of 218 all out. Luke Wood and Matt Parkinson each took three wickets.

Somerset suffered their first firstclass defeat at home since June 2017 after losing to local rivals Gloucestershire by eight wickets at Taunton. James Bracey struck an unbeaten 83 as the visitors, beginning the day on 28 for one, chased 153 in 41.1 overs to claim their second consecutive win.
