Chelsea fan tells striker Werner ‘to get out of club’

- By Tom Morgan

Timo Werner was told to “get out of the club” by a Chelsea fan on the public address system at Stamford Bridge while the German striker trained on the far side of the pitch.

Supporters had been asked by the stadium announcer for their score predictions for Sunday’s match against Arsenal when one fan hijacked the microphone to insult the German.

In scenes which prompted immediate anger from other spectators at the open training session, the fan said on loudspeaker: “Let’s have it right… get Werner out of the club.”

Another fan then got to her feet to scream abuse towards the supporter. “No, you get out,” she shouted. “Who are you? Who do you think you are?” The fan was reportedly then chased out of Stamford Bridge before getting in a taxi outside.

Werner, who signed from RB Leipzig for £53 million last summer, struggled in his first season in English football, scoring 12 goals and contributing 15 assists in 52 appearances. He is unlikely to be an automatic first-choice pick this season, with Chelsea now building a new-look attack around £98million signing Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for Saturday’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, but hopes to make his return against Mikel Arteta’s side on Sunday.

In Tuchel’s current 3-4-3 shape, there will be two places to fight for behind Lukaku. Against Crystal Palace, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic took those roles. Werner appears most likely to be handed a left-sided role alongside Lukaku, who has confirmed he will wear the Chelsea No 9 shirt vacated by Tammy Abraham following his £34million move to Roma.

And the former Everton and Manchester United forward is now excited to become the focal point of Tuchel’s attack.

“Yeah I have the No9 shirt, I’m very happy and very fortunate to be in the situation,” Lukaku said.
