Jon Rahm, the world No1, says he is on the mend ahead of next week’s Ryder Cup. The Spaniard is due to make his second Ryder Cup appearance against the United States at Whistling Straits, but missed the pro-am on Wednesday after feeling ill during a practice round. “I’m just a little run down from the season,” said the US Open champion, who has tested positive for coronavirus twice in the past three months. “I was having a hard time focusing given the fact that I haven’t had a solid meal since Tuesday morning. I heard there’s a stomach virus going on, but I feel OK. I’ve dealt with worse.”

Ireland international Tyrone Mccarthy has announced his retirement, aged 32. The Warrington-born loose forward, who twice won the Challenge Cup with his hometown club, joined Leigh at the start of the season following their Super League promotion. He played in all but one of the Centurions’ first 13 matches, but sustained a worrying head knock against his old club in June and has not played since.
