Klopp vows ‘this is only the start’ in plan to build Ferguson-style dynasty

- By Chris Bascombe

Jurgen Klopp has delivered a rallying cry to send a shudder down the spine of Liverpool’s rivals, vowing “this is just the start” of his Anfield dynasty.

The prospect of an era inviting comparison with that of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, or more pertinently Bill Shankly or Bob Paisley at Liverpool, is more real since Klopp committed to another four years on Merseyside.

Klopp said the reason he could not walk away was he realised the club were in the midst of a “special” period.

“There is no threat, this is only the start,” the German said. “That is the plan. That we really go for it. There are no guarantees. It is why we have to enjoy the journey and the journey so far is a great one.

“It is important that a lot of people know early. It is good for transfer windows. We cannot guarantee success but we can guarantee stability and in these difficult times, that is a big thing.

“It is just a sign we never stop trying to develop the situation. A team in the best age group, but time is running. We don’t think about changing the team in the next two or three years but we have to prepare.”

Klopp said he had considered the impact of global events in the past few years and it focused his mind on how grateful he was to be in such a position.

“The last two years were really hard for all of us because coronavirus dominated our lives and then the other guy [Vladimir Putin] put us all in trouble,” Klopp said. “In these moments, we learn again and have to cherish and appreciate what we can achieve when we are all together and what we want to have for longer.

“When you are together there is a good chance you come through these tougher periods with lesser harm.”

With Klopp signed up, attention inevitably turns to the future of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Klopp said he did not believe his deal would impact the star duo’s situation.

“That is a question for the boys, what it means to them,” Klopp said. “My relationship with them is great, but I don’t think this will be the one decisive thing for a decision they make for their lives. We just want to make sure that everyone who wants to know [I am staying], knows.”
