Lingard family lash out at club for denying him a farewell

- By James Ducker

Jesse Lingard’s brother has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United after the player was not given an Old Trafford farewell.

Lingard, who joined the club’s academy as a child and scored the winning goal in the 2016 FA Cup final, is set to leave United as a free agent at the end of the season, with AC Milan and Juventus leading the chase for the 29-year-old.

Monday’s 3-0 win over Brentford was expected to be his last match at Old Trafford for the club, but the England forward was left on the substitutes’ bench by interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who instead gave send-offs to Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Edinson Cavani and Phil Jones, all of whom are also due to leave this summer.

The decision drew a furious reaction from Lingard’s brother, Louie Scott, who accused the club of being “classless” and “run by people who don’t even know the offside trap” in a post on Instagram.

“Twenty years of blood, sweat and tears, four domestic trophies, three cup final goals, not even a farewell,” he said. “No wonder it’s the Conference League next year. Been there since nine years of age and didn’t even get a send-off!”

Lingard – who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham – has made just four starts for

United this term and was denied another loan move, this time to Newcastle, in January.

Rangnick said after the Brentford game that Lingard had not trained much for “personal reasons” and that Sunday was his first session in the run-up to that match. “He asked me to allow him some time at home,” Rangnick added.

Lingard is desperate to force his way into the England squad ahead of the World Cup in November.
