Bowen in line to make debut

- By Mike Mcgrath

Jarrod Bowen is set to be given his England debut in tonight’s Nations League clash against Hungary.

The West Ham forward, 25, who has been in good form this season, would have been given his first cap in March but was injured.

He trained in an attack alongside Harry Kane in Gareth Southgate’s final training sessions before the squad flew to Budapest for their Group Three opener.

Southgate has played a three-man defence in three of his last four matches and has been preparing with that system, using Trent Alexander-arnold as a wing-back. He played for Liverpool in the Champions League final last weekend but Southgate would rather use him early during England’s four matches and rest him after the Hungary and Germany fixtures.

Alexander-arnold missed out during the last international break through injury, while Kyle Walker has also returned to the squad and has put himself in contention for a place in defence after recovering from injury at the back end of Manchester City’s season.

Southgate insisted Bowen was ready to make his debut when speaking ahead of the fixture. Leicester’s James Justin was also selected and could make his debut off the bench.

“I won’t hesitate to play them,” said Southgate. “They’ve both settled in really well. They have both come into the squad looking as though they want to show what they can do rather than tentatively dipping a toe into the water and seeing how it all works. They’ll both cope, absolutely no problem. I’ve seen enough from them in training to see that they can fit in.”
