Kompany glad to keep Tella under wraps

-

Vincent Kompany watched Nathan Tella’s two goals fire Burnley into the last 16 of the FA Cup and then joked he had hidden his phone during January to ensure there was no danger of the forward being recalled by Southampton.

Tella scored after just 46 seconds of the fourth-round replay against Ipswich, but Burnley needed his second in stoppage time at Turf Moor to gain a 2-1 win over the visitors, who had levelled through George Hirst only three minutes into the match.

The goals were Tella’s 10th and 11th of the season for Burnley, the sort of production goal-shy Southampton might be able to use in their battle against Premier League relegation.

“We hid the phones and made sure nobody contacted us,” Kompany said with a laugh when asked if Southampton manager Nathan Jones had ever asked about recalling Tella. “The last thing we wanted was to ask questions. We’re happy he’s here with us and that’s all that matters.”

The victory set up a tie at home to Fleetwood of League One. Fleetwood reached the fifth round for the first time with a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. On-loan Luton winger Carlos Mendes Gomes met Phoenix Patterson’s 60th-minute free-kick to score his eighth goal this season.

League Two Grimsby produced a shock as they secured a 3-0 victory over Championship opponents Luton, who are 60 places above them in the pyramid. The tie was settled by half-time as goals from Harry Clifton, Danilo Orsi and Danny Amos did the damage.

Grimsby will travel to Southampton in the fifth round.
