Werner wants Spurs move made permanent

- By Matt Law

Timo Werner already wants to turn his loan to Tottenham Hotspur into a permanent move that could cost the club less than £15million.

It is understood that Tottenham have the option to buy Werner for around £14.5million from RB Leipzig before the European Championship starts on June 14.

Spurs could sign Werner after that date, but may face competition and the threat of his price going up should they choose to wait.

Werner, the former Chelsea forward, has settled well into life back in London after joining on loan from Leipzig in the January transfer window, scoring two goals in his past three games.

The 28-year-old has already registered two assists and is believed to have told allies that he would be happy to stay at Spurs past the end of this season.

Tottenham could enter the transfer market for an out-and-out striker this summer, but there may be space for Werner as well if interest from Saudi Arabia in Richarlison results in an offer.

Asked about Werner’s impact, Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou said: “I think he’s been really important. You can only imagine if we didn’t bring him in in January, it would have been a much bigger burden on the other players in the group. Particularly when Sonny [Son Heung-min] was away as well.

“We threw him in straight away

and when you come in in January, especially for someone like Timo, standing as a mature player, he’s not a young player we’ve brought in to develop, we’re bringing him in to make an impact, and I think he has made an impact for us.

“I do think there’s more to come from him, for sure. He’s working hard in training. I think his performances are improving.”

Werner’s arrival has also helped cover for the loss of summer signing Manor Solomon to injury, with the winger suffering another setback as Spurs confirmed he underwent minor surgery to the meniscus on his right knee this week.
