Winter fashion that will lift your mood

The Daily Telegraph - Telegraph Magazine - - FRONT PAGE - By Victoria Moss

Originally conceived for fancy folk heading of for winter sun, resort collections have grown into the fashion industry’s big earner. While they are still angled towards warmer weather, they also ofer a more wearable – and often lower priced – alternative to the main autumn/winter and summer seasons. These collections sit in store the longest (from now until the sales next June), and so are responsible for the biggest slice of any retailer’s takings.

Holly Russell, senior buyer at Net-a-porter, explains, ‘Resort has become a very important season and designers use this time to reinterpret their creative vision in more wearable ways or to experiment with new ideas.’

Meanwhile, online shopping has also meant that designers need to cater to an increasing number of climates – it’s always summer somewhere. Avenue 32’s CEO Roberta Benteler says, ‘With global customers experiencing warm weather all year round, we see high demand for resort wear, resulting in it accounting for the majority [typically 60 per cent] of our [annual] buy.’ As ever, the high street isn’t missing a trick either – both Topshop Unique and Whistles now have dedicated resort collections. Take our tour of the treats on ofer …

Furry boots and winter woollies are all very well, but if you’re already craving a splash of colour and a breath of spring air, here’s some good news. You can start shopping the new season – right now.
