The Daily Telegraph - Telegraph Magazine - - Just Williams -

A mycorrhiza is a mutually beneficial relationship between roots (1) and fungi (2), which exist by taking sugars from plants and trees in exchange for moisture and nutrients gathered from the soil by the fungal strands (3). Mycorrhizae greatly increase the absorptive area of trees, acting as extensions to their root systems.
