The honeymoon period

The Daily Telegraph - Telegraph Magazine - - Contents -

A HONEYMOON IS the perfect time for a newly-wed couple to set about a particularly engrossing conjugal activity… Puzzling over the etymology of ‘honeymoon’, of course. One explanation is that this is the sweetest month (‘moon’) of marriage. Sorry, Harry and Meghan, all downhill from here. Or – this one’s nicer – the term harks back to a custom of giving the newly-weds a month’s worth of mead. If the wife drank it faithfully, she’d bear a child within the year. A few kegs and they’ll be catching up with Wills and Kate in no time. — Tom Ough
