A Princess Royal retrospective

The Daily Telegraph - Telegraph Magazine - - Contents -

YOU COULD LET me tell you that the Princess Royal is a comic genius, or you could just take a look at her mid-’80s interview with Michael Parkinson, in which she insouciantly describes the time in 1974 when she was almost kidnapped (no, really) by a mentally ill gunman. She’s all raised eyebrows and smirks, and the studio audience sounds like a laughter track. ‘He said I had to go with him,’ the Princess recalls casually, before adding with mock thoughtfulness, ‘I can’t remember why.’ Giggling. ‘He got the door back open,’ she continues later, ‘and in the process, the back of my dress split… all the shoulders went out of it. And that’ – she smirks, to the delight of the audience – ‘was his most dangerous moment.’ — Tom Ough
