‘For my first collection, my goal was to return to the brand’s roots,’ says Francesco Fucci, who arrived at one of New York’s most understated houses, Theory, from another, The Row, back in May. After five years working behind the scenes as Marykate and Ashley Olsen’s head designer (and arguably securing their label’s cult status), Fucci is an expert in developing stealth luxury must-haves.

His pre-spring debut at Theory contains what he calls a ‘glossary of garments for the modern woman’ and he has worked to perfect the original trousers, jacket and shirt designs that house co-founder Andrew Rosen made back in 1997.

Fine fabric, great fit and minimalist styling lead Fucci’s principles and, as an Italian living in New York, he enjoyed focusing on some very specific parts of US culture. ‘I looked at American uniforms of the past, like the nurse and the postal worker, as sources of inspiration,’ he explains. ‘The uniform has always been part of Theory’s DNA. These are pieces that a woman should not live without.’ Prices from £65, theory.com.
