The ar­mourer who turned a hobby into a ca­reer

For the last 10 years Gra­ham Ash­ford [pic­tured right, in and out of ar­mour] has made replica ar­moury for col­lec­tors, re-en­ac­tors and mu­se­ums, but it all started out as a pas­time. He has long en­joyed tak­ing part in his­tor­i­cal re-en­act­ments and for years he cre­ated his equip­ment in his shed, but af­ter be­ing made re­dun­dant in 2008 he took a punt and started his own busi­ness. The se­cret to en­sur­ing his pieces are on track is, says Ash­ford, to closely in­spect the ham­mer marks of the orig­i­nal.
