Cleaner-turned-artist Alastair Barford landed his first ever portrait commission in 2015 – to paint the Queen. He had just 10 minutes to observe her at close quarters (during an Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle), compared with the 40 hours he usually spends with subjects. ‘The challenge was to convey character and depth based on these fleeting glances and photographs,’ he says.
