March 2008

Model Katie Piper, then 24, had sulphuric acid thrown in her face by Stefan Sylvestre, who was following her ex-boyfriend Daniel Lynch’s orders. She’s since had ‘hundreds of ’ surgeries. Lynch was jailed for life with a minimum of 16 years. Sylvestre, who received a life sentence with a minimum of six years, was released this summer.

December 2012

Shop worker Naomi Oni, then 20, was on her way home from work in Stratford, east London, when her old school friend Mary Konye, disguised in a niqab, threw acid over her. Konye was identified by the handbag she was carrying and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

August 2014

Beauty therapist Adele Bellis, then 22, was waiting for a bus when Jason Harrison threw sulphuric acid over her, causing her to lose her ear and become partially bald. Harrison had been paid £500 by Bellis’s ex-boyfriend Anthony Riley, who was jailed for life.

September 2015

Constructi­on worker Mark van Dongen, 28, woke at 3am to find his ex-girlfriend Berlinah Wallace throwing sulphuric acid over him. Fifteen months later, paralysed and in pain, van Dongen ended his life at a euthanasia clinic. Wallace was found not guilty of murder, but guilty of throwing a corrosive substance with intent.

April 2017

Arthur Collins flung acid across partygoers at Mangle E8 club in Hackney. He was convicted on five counts of grievous bodily harm with intent and nine counts of actual bodily harm, and jailed for 20 years.

June 2017

Resham Khan, 21, and her cousin Jameel Muhktar, 37, were left with devastatin­g injuries after John Tomlin threw acid through their car windows at traffic lights. While in hospital, Khan wrote an open letter: ‘My plans are in pieces, my pain is unbearable, and I write this letter in hospital whilst I patiently wait for the return of my face.’

July 2018

A three-year-old boy in a pushchair was injured in a suspected targeted acid attack at a shop in Worcester. He was with his mother at the time. Six men, including the boy’s father, and one woman have been charged with conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.
