FESTIVAL TIME
Clerkenwell Design Week, which starts on Tuesday, is marking its 10th anniversary with seven exhibition spaces to explore. In the design world, this festival in north-east London has traditionally been associated with office and commercial furniture, but recent years have seen a marked move towards patterned textiles, stylish seating and inventive use of materials. Evidence of that comes in the form of vibrant maximalist fabrics by brands including The Monkey Puzzle Tree and Anna Hayman Designs; glamorous velvet chairs by Italian company Tacchini; and tiles by Alusid (right) made from waste materials, including broken bathroom fittings and glass collected from the roadside. For a programme of events, visit clerkenwelldesignweek.com.
MATCH POINTS
A new collection by lighting company Pooky is intended to make it easier to create a cohesive look in your home. The brand has teamed up with Attikoart, which produces customisable art prints, to offer three pairs of complementary, colour-matched prints and lampshades (left), all with an on-trend marble motif. From £25 for a lampshade, pooky.com and attikoart.com.
THE BAUHAUS EFFECT
Heal’s is celebrating the centenary of the Bauhaus design school with a new collection and an installation at its Tottenham Court Road flagship store, from Monday until 18 June. Although it closed in 1933, the school’s ‘form meets function’ aesthetic continues to influence designers today – and several have worked with Heal’s on Bauhausinspired homewares including minimalist ceramics and table lamps, and cushions and throws in geometric patterns and bold colours. Heal’s was one of the first British shops to sell original Bauhaus pieces, some of which, such as Knoll’s Barcelona chair (below), will form part of the Tottenham Court Road display.
