Chef Gizzi Erskine likes slow starts, good skincare and boozy meals out
Chef and food writer Gizzi Erskine, 40, on lazy mornings, boozy lunches and lots (and lots) of eating
Midday I live in Dalston, east London, in a two-floor warehouse – it’s very kitsch with lots of pink. Friday nights I go to Moth Club in Hackney and do a little bit of dancing, so I lie in on Saturdays. I wake up with my two cats, Kimchi and Ponzu, doing a little tap dance on me. I make a proper Italian-style cappuccino, get back into bed and watch The Good Place.12.30pm I hop in the shower for five minutes. I just used to wash my face with soap, but in the past five years I’ve become obsessed with beauty products. I use Eve Lom for my cleanser, then put on Herbivore Prism Exfoliating
Glow Potion – the best beauty product I’ve ever used. Next comes Dr Dennis Gross serum and Oskia Super-c Beauty Capsules, followed by Zelens eye cream and Dr Roebuck’s moisturiser. I live in a corduroy onepiece by Rock The Jumpsuit and just bought some Christian Louboutin boots.1pm I love the restaurant 40 Maltby Street in Bermondsey for lunch. I share a couple of bottles of natural wine between friends and roast ham, mustard and bread. 5pm I jump in a cab and head to Chinatown with my boyfriend (I spend a lot of time eating on a Saturday). I go to C&R Café [a Malaysian diner], and get roti canai, a flatbread that you dip into curry sauce. If I’m still hungry, I’ll have wat tan hor, a wok-fried noodle dish served with seafood and pickled jalapeños; it’s delicious. 6pm We pop over to The Groucho. I might pick up some waifs and strays, like Rose Dougall [singer], Martha Sitwell [make-up artist and ex-model] and Jack Guinness [model and actor]. We just have one drink, buy a nice bottle of barolo at Berry Bros & Rudd and get a cab home. 7pm My kitchen is huge and open-plan – perfect to potter around in. When I get the time to cook I do roast chicken or spaghetti bolognese. I put on the B-52s, Young Fathers or Nick Cave – my friends and I tend to go quite late. Bed My bedroom routine depends on how drunk I am. I sleep on the right-hand side of my enormous Heal’s velvet sleigh bed, covered in House of Hackney cushions.
