How celebrity hair colourist Josh Wood spends his weekend

The hair colourist to the stars, 53, whose clients have included David Bowie and Saoirse Ronan, on yoga, matcha lattes and Zoom crosswords

6am I’m an early riser. I’ve worked since I was 17, so it’s part of my body clock. Jonathan [Wood’s partner and CEO of Josh Wood Colour] sleeps much later. I take a bath with Aromatherapy Associates Revive bath oil, then walk Gandalf, a mongrel Romanian street dog, in the fields behind where we are in Hailey, Oxfordshire. I was in Ladbroke Grove for the first part [of lockdown], but then scarpered to our cottage in the country. 10am

I have a piece of toast or a yogurt, then I’m on the yoga mat. I’m doing Zoom classes by [instructors] Manizeh Rimer or Durga Devi, and it’s helped keep me – my mind and everything – on track during lockdown. 11am There’s a coffee shop called UE Coffee Roasters in Witney, and a farmer’s market. They have wonderful sourdough and my matcha latte. We get home, read the papers and have something like soup for lunch. 2pm I do video consultations with clients and I’m on the executive board of the British Beauty Council – we’ve been in workshops with the Home Secretary looking at how best to support the industry and get close-contact service businesses open as quickly as possible. We’re all planning for 4 July [the earliest the Government has said salons may reopen], though we’ll probably be at less than 50 per cent capacity because of social distancing. 3.30pm

We head out on a long walk with Gandalf – there are some idyllic ones in the area. 5.30pm We’ve got into a ritual with Jonathan’s parents, who are in their 70s and live in Cornwall – we do a crossword together on Zoom. 7pm

We’ll make something from a cookery book. We’ve enjoyed meze recipes from Falastin: A Cookbook by Sami Tamimi and Tara Wigley. Jonathan is in charge of the music. He introduced me to Laura Mvula, who is amazing. 8pm We’re watching the miniseries Little Fires Everywhere [with Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon]. Then I start pottering. I might get my notebooks out for a bit of referencing [for future hairstyles]. I archive cuttings to do with dance, fashion, interiors – everything. 9.30pm

I slap on Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Overnight Facial and go to bed.

Wood is a co-founder of at-home hair-colour brand Josh Wood Colour, joshwoodcolour.com; his salon is in Holland Park, west London
