My Saturday
Woman’s Hour’s Emma Barnett on kitchen discos and pedal power
6.30am If I’m lucky our threeyear-old son sleeps through. For Woman’s Hour I get up at 5.30am and read the papers on my phone then at 6am I put on the Today programme. I’ve definitely had those [down] moments during lockdown, but I’m grateful to be really busy. My dress code is casual. I’m often in a playground in a massive coat and Ugg-style boots. 9am For breakfast we cook eggs and smoked salmon, and have French toast with challah, the traditional Jewish bread leftover from Friday night. I love taking a moment with my husband and son to light the Shabbat candles. It truly signals the start of the weekend. 10am We don’t live far from Borough Market [south London], so often go to buy ingredients. I adore Feasts, Sabrina Ghayour’s book. I have cooked everything, from her jewelled rice to her saffron chicken. I’m a massive art fan, so pre-lockdown we would go to a gallery. One of my favourite paintings is Bathers at Asnières by Georges Seurat at the National Gallery. 12.30pm Lunch is quite grazy – fresh bread, mackerel pâte and a nice big salad. 2pm We do a bit of crafting with my son. Then go to the playground. For my birthday last month, my husband got me a Bobbin fold-up bike. It’s the first time I’ve had a bike for years. I’m trying to build up my confidence and resist the urge to mount the pavement. 6pm We have a kitchen disco while drinking a glass of wine. We’ve got a kids’ disco ball and I have a Spotify playlist of my son’s favourite songs, including Queen’s We Will Rock You. 7.30pm We usually get a Deliveroo, or for a special occasion we get a restaurant meal kit. St John’s is incredible, my hands-down favourite is bone marrow and parsley. 9pm We might do a Zoom call or watch a movie. If we are feeling more virtuous, there’s a heated game of Scrabble. Tv-wise I’m still working my way through Schitt’s Creek, and I am addicted to Fran Lebowitz on Netflix – she is a tonic for our times. 11.30pm Just before I go to bed, I look at the Sunday papers online. I love seeing the front pages. Midnight If I’m being good, I’ll take my make-up off, cleanse and moisturise. Often it will be, ‘Mmm, might take that off properly in the morning.’
